14,387 Stones Removed from Gallbladder, Guinness Record Application Filed
Astonishing Gallbladder Surgery in Turkey: 14,387 Stones Removed
Kemal Doğru (64), who visited Tokat State Hospital due to abdominal pain, had a total of 14,387 stones removed from his gallbladder. General Surgery Specialist at Tokat State Hospital, Dr. Vahit Mutlu, expressed his amazement, saying, “We were astonished when we counted. We had the stones counted in the presence of a notary and applied to the Guinness World Records.”
A Record-Breaking Surgery
Kemal Doğru, a married father of two from Kemalpaşa village in Tokat, visited Tokat State Hospital around 40 days ago due to abdominal pain. Following initial treatment, he was diagnosed with jaundice and referred to Gaziosmanpaşa University Hospital. After a week of treatment there, he was transferred back to Tokat State Hospital.
After an examination revealed stones in his gallbladder, Doğru underwent surgery two days ago, performed by General Surgery Specialist Dr. Vahit Mutlu. The surgery, which lasted about 1.5 hours, resulted in the removal of 14,387 stones of various sizes from Doğru’s gallbladder.
‘A Historic Record Was Set’
Dr. Vahit Mutlu shared his astonishment during the surgery, saying, “The patient’s gallbladder had expanded to two or three times its normal size and was filled with stones. We struggled to perform the gallbladder surgery. We completed this operation using a laparoscopic procedure, which is a minimally invasive method.
Upon seeing the stones, we were amazed. During the surgery, we realized that the number of stones could potentially set a world record. The previous world record was also set in Turkey, in Malatya, where a colleague removed 8,422 stones during a gallbladder surgery.
In our surgery, we set a historic record with 14,387 stones. This is currently the gallbladder surgery with the most stones removed in the world. We had the stones counted in the presence of a notary and applied to be included in the Guinness World Records.”
‘I Was Unaware’
Having regained his health, Kemal Doğru said, “I came here with abdominal pain. They diagnosed me with jaundice and said there were stones in my gallbladder. They treated me with medication for about 20 to 25 days. After 25 days, they said I would have surgery. I had the surgery and recovered.
People are amazed, saying ‘how did you carry around all those stones?’ I wasn’t aware,” he explained.
